Opening Sunday of the 2015 NFL season was a rough one for sportsbooks in Las Vegas, as public bettors did unusually well according to an ESPN article by expert sports gaming writer David Purdum.
Westgate, Wynn, William Hill, MGM, Caesars, CG Technology, Stratosphere and Station Casinos all reported a losing day according to the article.
Favorites did well covering 9 out of the 13 day games with tons of money being bet on the victorious Packers and Dolphins. With so many of the favorites winning - multiple bet parlay cards started to pay off big.
Among the underdogs that did win - the Rams were a popular choice among professionals, which caused even more pain for the books.
Early season games are usually big moneymakers for the sportsbooks, although the lines can be softer because nobody has seen what these teams can do yet. As the season goes on I would expect the lines to tighten up and the books to get back on track, hoping to match the $113.7 million they won on football in 2014.

Elvis Exhibition at Westgate
A new Elvis exhibit is coming to Westgate - the hotel Elvis called home while performing in Las Vegas (then called The International and later the Las Vegas Hilton).
"Graceland Presents ELVIS: The Exhibition - The Show - The Experience" set to open April 23, 2015 will feature 28,000 square feet of Elvis memorabilia and artifacts.
In addition to the exhibit - the Elvis Presley International Showroom has been remodeled and for a limited time will feature Elvis themed shows.
As if that weren't enough "Elvis Presley’s Graceland Wedding Chapel" will also debut in conjunction with the exhibit and the show.
Elvis is obviously a huge part of the history of Las Vegas entertainment, so it makes perfect sense to have an exhibit like this. Given the size and scope of this exhibition, and the fact that it's being run by Graceland - this is likely going to be a must visit attraction for Elvis fans.

Westgate Las Vegas Resort
The property recently known as LVH and Las Vegas Hilton before that has been sold and is now Westgate Las Vegas Resort.
Westgate is known as a timeshare company, but only a small part of the hotel will be reserved for timeshare use. The focus instead will be on improving the resort and the guest experience - according to this vegas.com article.
I've always liked this property. They have the best sportsbook in Las Vegas, and the rooms are a good value. The biggest drawback is the location, but the monorail can get you to the Strip pretty easily.
With SLS opening soon (also along the monorail) and the north Strip potentially seeing an upswing with Resorts World - Westgate could be in decent position to take advantage down the line.
It will be an uphill battle though. Westgate's location next to the convention center might be their best selling point - but at the same time could be a weakness in attracting non-convention visitors. I think the hotel has a reputation of being for business people and not a fun place to party.
Hopefully the new ownership can revitalize the place and turn things around.

Linsanity hits Las Vegas Sportsbooks
The Jeremy Lin phenomenon has been taking over ESPN and newspaper sports pages. Now even Las Vegas sportsbooks are feeling the effect.
The odds of the New York Knicks winning the NBA championship have been reduced dramatically since Lin began his incredible run just over a week ago.
LVH (formerly the Las Vegas Hilton) has lowered the Knicks chances from 50-1 down to 25-1, while the Wynn sportsbook currently has them at 20-1, down from 30-1.

Las Vegas Hilton is now LVH
Back in August it was reported that Hilton would be ending their partnership agreement with the Las Vegas Hilton at the end of 2011.
Well, 2011 is over so the hotel has indeed changed its name to LVH, which apparantly stands for the very generic "Las Vegas Hotel."
The name change is similar to the Atlantic City Hilton, which earlier in 2011 changed their name to ACH.
When I first heard the news about the Las Vegas Hilton I was hoping they would go back to their original name of The International. I also speculated that the hotel would partner up with another hotel chain, which I suppose could still happen at some point.
Check out the new LVH website for all the info about the name change.

Las Vegas Hilton needs New Name
Las Vegas Hilton will be ending its partnership agreement with Hilton at the end of the year, so it looks like the hotel will need to find a new name.
When I first heard this news I immediately thought the property should switch back to its former name: The International.
Another possibility is the hotel partnering with an established brand. As boring as it may be, the property becoming a Sheraton, Hyatt or Marriott is probably likely scenario.

Kirk Kerkorian Retiring from MGM Board
MGM Resorts International announced this week that founder and major shareholder Kirk Kerkorian will be stepping down from the Board of Directors. This is essentially a retirement for the almost 94 year old Kerkorian, although he will still remain with the company in an advisory role.
Kirk Kerkorian's time in Las Vegas dates back to the early 1960's. He is probably most well known in Vegas for opening the International hotel (now Las Vegas Hilton), the original MGM Grand (now Bally's) and the current MGM Grand.
For a good biography of Kirk Kerkorian with lots of cool old pictures, check out In Old Las Vegas.

Vegas hopes for Record Super Bowl Wagers
An attractive Super Bowl match up of two teams with storied histories (and large traveling fan bases) could add up to record wagering on the game in Las Vegas. The Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers will play on Sunday, February 6th.
Managers of two of the largest sports books in Las Vegas are predicting total wagers for the Super Bowl to range between 90-100 million, according to the New York Post. John Avello of Wynn is hoping for wagers to reach $100 million, while Jay Kornegay of Las Vegas Hilton is predicting a more conservative $90 million. The all time record is $94.5 million wagered, but that was in 2006 before the recession and during the heyday of Las Vegas visitation numbers.
As it stands right now, the Packers are slight favorites. Prop bets on things like the coin toss and wagers on the stats of individual players are expected to be posted this weekend.

Tiger Woods good for Vegas Sportsbooks
Tiger Woods' return at the Masters last weekend was great for Las Vegas, as the sportsbooks took full advantage.
M Resort reports that wagers on Tiger possibly set a new betting record for the property.
Las Vegas Hilton says that it was the biggest golf tournament in history, with a 30% increase over the previous biggest, but still fell way short of the Super Bowl and March Madness.
