Las Vegas band Imagine Dragons released a video for their song Shots (Broiler Remix) which features the band members at Stratosphere. They went on all of the Stratosphere thrill rides - Big Shot, Insanity, X-Scream and Sky Jump. Equipped with Go-Pro cameras they got some amazing footage of what it's like to experience these rides.

High Roller Averaging 5000 Riders Per Day
On a recent earnings call, Caesars Entertainment revealed the High Roller observation wheel attraction is averaging 5000 riders per day.
The High Roller is the centerpiece of The Linq pedestrian walkway between Flamingo and the newly renamed Linq Hotel (formerly The Quad and Imperial Palace before that).
While 5000 riders is below the 10000 riders originally projected for the High Roller, ridership is growing - up 10% from the previous quarter.
Caesars executives commented about how challenging the marketing aspect of the attraction is, with ridership varying drastically depending on seasonality and demographics. It's possible that once the marketing is fully optimized that 10000 daily riders wouldn't be out of the question as a long term goal.
5000 average daily riders adds up to 1.825 million riders a year, which means roughly 5% of Las Vegas visitors end up riding the High Roller. That seems like an OK number, but Caesars will definitely want to push that higher if they want to fully optimize The Linq.

High Roller Photos and Thoughts
The High Roller observation wheel has been open for a few months. Reviews seem to be mixed. While most people enjoy the ride and say it has great views, ridership seems to be low. Prices started out high for the attraction, but coupons and comps are becoming more common now.

My parents went on recently and sent me these photos. They went during the day and were able to get a pod to themselves. While they had a good time I don't think they would go out of their way to ride again.

The High Roller is the centerpiece to The Linq development, which is a walkway between Flamingo and The Quad lined with restaurants and retail. I'm getting the same type of vibe from the Linq as the High Roller - it's a nice place but most people aren't making special plans to go there.

A recent trend for Caesars Entertainment is also to offer High Roller view rooms in their hotels. It does look pretty cool at night. Here's a shot of the July 4th fireworks from the Flamingo.

Adventuredome getting El Loco Roller Coaster
The Adventuredome indoor amusement park at Circus Circus is getting a new roller coaster.
Construction of the El Loco coaster will begin soon, and the ride should debut by December 2013.
Adventuredome's Rim Runner flume ride will be closing to make room for the El Loco coaster.
There are currently four El Loco type coasters operating around the world. Here's a video of one of the other El Loco type coasters from the maker S&S Worldwide:

Slotzilla Zipline on Fremont Street
The zipline on Fremont Street is getting upgraded. What had been a temporary platform will be transformed into a huge faux slot machine called Slotzilla where thrill-seekers will begin their descent.
The new permanent attraction will increase the zipline height to approximately 100 feet and the length to 1700 feet. The slot machine structure will have two levels of four ziplines each, and will also feature safety doors and the ability to "launch" riders.
The new zipline is scheduled to open during the first half of 2013.
This video from coastercrew has a good explanation of the attraction from a project consultant, along with a model of Slotzilla:

South Strip Ferris Wheel Project
Plans for an amusement park that would feature a 500 foot Ferris Wheel have been approved by Clark County commissioners. The location is across the Strip from Mandalay Bay on the same site as the closed Cloud Nine balloon.
Plans for the amusement park call for up to seven rides with a possible expansion to include shopping, restaurants and convention space.
It appears that funding is still needed for the $100 million project, so it's far from being a done deal. It will be interesting to see if they can come up with the money to build this thing.
There have been a few different Ferris Wheel projects proposed for Las Vegas over the years but none of them have come to fruition. Most recently Caesars Entertainment featured a Ferris Wheel in their plans for Project Linq, which still seems to be on the table.

Cloud Nine is Closed Permanently
Cloud Nine - the balloon ride attraction near Mandalay Bay has closed again, and this time it looks to be permanent. Cloud Nine opened about a year ago and operated for about six months before it was forced to close because of damage caused by high winds. The attraction recently re-opened but apparently didn't draw enough interest to continue operations.
From the Cloud Nine website:
"The Cloud Nine Balloon Ride in Las Vegas has closed is no longer in operation. We want to thank the thousands of customers who had the opportunity to fly with us over the skies of Las Vegas. We bid you a fond farewell."
The balloon was an interesting concept, but there were many pitfalls surrounding the project. High wind days made for an uncomfortable ride, if they were even able to take off at all. The cost and location also might have been drawbacks. In the end I think most people prefer to take in a view of the Strip from a high floor in an enclosed building.

Parabounce coming to Las Vegas in 2011
Parabounce is a concept that allows people to bounce and fly around using their own individual helium balloons. Las Vegas seems like the perfect place for an attraction like this, and so the Parabounce people are planning on opening a "100,000 square foot “bubble style” dome where up to 20 flyers can simultaneously float, soar and bounce in individual, 22-foot, Parabounce helium balloons."

Fremont Street Flightline
A new zip-line attraction will be opening soon at the Fremont Street Experience. Riders will be able to traverse 800 feet of zip-line under the Fremont Street canopy going from a height of 67 feet dropping down to a 15 feet high landing area.
This looks like a pretty cool attraction, and may be a good solution for thrill seekers who are too afraid, or don't want to pay $100 for the Stratosphere Sky Jump.
Oktoberfest is back for another haunting season of freakish fun at the Fremont Street Experience. If ghosts and goblins aren’t enough to scare you, why not fly down "Frightlines” under the Fremont Street Canopy. Imagine being part of the Viva Vision show as you launch down a zip line that runs approximately 800 feet in length. The crowds underneath cheer as you zoom past on your broom from 67 feet dropping down to 15 feet at landing!
Hours of Operation: (however the schedule will vary based on volume)
Weekends: Thurs, Fri, Sat 2pm – 2am
Weekdays: Sun-Wed 2pm - midnight
Rates:
$15 before 6pm; $10 re-ride
$20 after 6pm; $15 re-ride
Re-rides include head of the line privileges
For more information check out Fremont Street Flightline.
UPDATE: The temporary zipline on Fremont Street will be upgraded to a permanent structure called Slotzilla in 2013.

Stratosphere Sky Jump Videos
The new Sky Jump at Stratosphere officially opens on Tuesday, but test jumpers have already been spotted taking the plunge.
The jump costs $99.99 and you can purchase photos and a DVD recording at an additional cost. Not a bad price, but I would be interested to see if the "half price ticket" places around town will have these for sale after the buzz dies down a little bit.
It looks like an amazing experience, but I don't know if I would be able to go through with it. I wonder if you get a refund if you chicken out at the last minute and refuse to jump?
Update - the videos that were previously attached to this post no longer exist, but check out this footage of Imagine Dragons riding Sky Jump and the other rides at Stratosphere.
