Update on Stalled Construction Projects

Four years ago I wrote a blog post about stalled and abandoned Las Vegas construction projects. I thought it would be fun to go back and see what has happened to those projects:

- Fontainebleau - sold to Carl Icahn and is essentially abandoned.

- Echelon - sold to Genting Group and will be built into Resorts World.

- St. Regis tower at Palazzo - Still unfinished. A building wrap was installed to hide the construction. Las Vegas Sands has talked about doing something with it, but that hasn't happened yet.

- Harmon Hotel at CityCenter - The tower was deconstructed. The Crystals mall will likely expand into that space.

- The Shops at Summerlin - Developed by the Howard Hughes Corporation it was re-branded as Downtown Summerlin and is open with a multitude of retail and dining establishments.

- Wyndham Desert Blue timeshare across from Rio - Work resumed in 2013 and the project was finished. It's a nice looking building.

- ManhattanWest - The project was purchased for pennies on the dollar and construction resumed in 2013. It was renamed The Gramercy and is now open with upscale residential, retail, and office space.

- Vantage Lofts - opened in spring 2014 as Vantage Luxury Flats and Loft Living.

- Mercer - The project was purchased by a developer who plans to open it in the first quarter of 2017. They kept the name Mercer.

I couldn't find any updates on Parkline Lofts, Spanish View Towers, or Uptown. I'm assuming they're still stalled and/or abandoned.

Resorts World June 2015 update

Vegas Inc had an interview with Paul Steelman of Resorts World Las Vegas.

Resorts World seems to be bringing back the themed resort, focusing on attractions that will appeal to a wide range of people. This is in contrast with the non-themed resorts that have opened on the Strip recently like Aria, Cosmopolitan, SLS, and The Cromwell.

Despite the focus on attractions - two of the previously heralded attractions - a live panda habitat and a water park - have been pushed to "phase two" of the project. One attraction that looks pretty cool is a sphere that goes up and down the side of the building.

Resorts World Breaking Ground May 5, 2015

Construction on Resorts World Las Vegas will break ground on May 5, 2015 as first reported by the Review Journal.

The groundbreaking will take place approximately one year later than most people expected. The transaction selling Echelon by Boyd to Genting took place in March 2013. It was widely reported that construction would take place a year later in the spring of 2014 but that didn't happen.

Genting has been taking a conservative approach to this project. It seems like they wanted to be completely sure about the economy before they start building, which is smart. They are also opening the resort in phases - seemingly a prudent approach compared to the all or nothing approach that CityCenter used. There is also no official timetable for completion which allows for extra flexibility.

The May 5th start date is an interesting one, as it comes one day after the closing of the historic Riviera hotel right across the street. Coincidence or not, it's certainly symbolic in a "circle of life" kind of way.

Resorts World Las Vegas

I haven't had a chance to blog about Resorts World Las Vegas - so here goes.

The Stardust was imploded in 2006 to make room for Echelon - a huge resort project with multiple hotel and condo elements. Simply put Echelon was going to be the north Strip's version of CityCenter. When construction started the economy crashed and Boyd had the foresight to halt the project early. The project sat dormant for a few years until March 2013 when Boyd announced they had sold the Echelon land to Genting Group for $350 million.

Genting is a large Malaysian company with properties all over the world. They do have a presence in the United States having opened Resorts World New York a few years ago at Aqueduct.

Resorts World Las Vegas is going to be built on the existing Echelon layout. It is expected to open in phases, starting out with 3,000 rooms with the potential to double that down the road. Some other family friendly features like an indoor water park and a panda exhibit have also been mentioned.

The resort is going to have a strong Asian theme, which is refreshing since most Vegas hotels are moving away from themed spaces. The family friendly aspect of the resort is also different, but makes sense considering it will be catering to international families on vacation.

Work behind the scenes is well underway, with visible construction set to begin any day now. I'm definitely looking forward to keeping tabs on the progress.

Las Vegas in 2014

I've been away from the blog for a while. I'm always thinking about Las Vegas and it's about time I start posting again. Some of the topics I plan on covering soon are:

- The Cromwell
- Downtown Grand
- The Linq and the High Roller
- The Quad name change to The Linq
- SLS Las Vegas
- Resorts World
- MGM-AEG Arena
- Cosmopolitan sold
- Atlantic City

Las Vegas is constantly changing so there's a lot to write about.
